On Wednesday morning, Chimaev shared a montage of photos that showed him looking extremely unwell in hospital, but he failed to reveal exactly what illness he was battling.

“I was very sick, my hand was injured, so I couldn’t return right away,” he captioned the post.

“I want to tell all the fountains, I want to see myself in battle more than all of you, I love this job, I will do and prove that I am the best, as always we do.

A third person added: “I genuinely wanna know how one of the best athletes in the world can look like this. Wtf happened?”

Someone else commented: “What’s going on with Khamzat Chimaev?”

‘Borz’ last fought in October when he outpointed former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman over three rounds in a middleweight clash at UFC 294.

Before that, he had a 13-month layoff, and it wasn’t his first.

Chimaev was booked to face Leon Edwards in a welterweight bout in December 2020. However, that fight failed to materialise due to Covid-19 complications affecting both fighters.

The illness impacted ‘Borz’ more than most and he ended up suffering breathing difficulties and coughing up blood during training.

Chimaev suddenly announced his retirement and blamed the virus.

The 29-year-old was quick to ease fears a similar post was coming in 2024 as he returned to X and showed that the photos were old with a new video update.

“I’m coming back soon, for my belts,” a fresh-faced Chimaev said.

Regardless of his happy follow-up post, fans are increasingly concerned that inactivity and illness will stop Chimaev from fluffing his potential by becoming a UFC champion in multiple weight classes.
