Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes: How to Watch

• Bookmarks: 3

“It’s a wonderful day!” boasts a monkey in the trailer for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. He’s not lying. With positive early reviews and masterfully rendered CGI apes, the fourth film in the rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise looks like a summer blockbuster hit.

Kingdom takes place some 300 years in the future, when apes rule the planet and humans are hunted for sport. According to Disney and 20th Century Studios, Kingdom is as a standalone sequel that will act as a new jumping-on point for another potential trilogy. Director Wes Bell (The Maze Runner) helms the primitive tale, classifying himself as a “VFX nerd.” In an interview with Filmhounds, he said, “We approached [Planet of the Apes] from a place of love… another chapter in this long legacy of ten movies now over 55 years. We just tried to make sure we had a good enough story that needed to be told.”

The film premieres in theaters on Friday, May 10, with early showtimes starting on Thursday, May 9 in select cities. After its theatrical run, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will likely hit streaming on Disney+ and Hulu later this fall. Disney did not release an exact streaming date for viewers at home just yet. But if you’re looking to catch up with all nine previous Planet of the Apes films, they’re all currently available to stream on Hulu.

The film stars Owen Teague (It Chapter Two), who takes over leading-ape duties from Andy Serkis, while Freya Allan (The Witcher) and the talented William H. Macy (Shameless) play the few remaining humans. Get your tickets now—before the planet belongs to the apes.
