Mike Johnson Already Making MAGA Mad…

• Bookmarks: 13

House Speaker Mike Johnson has already ticked off some supporters of the MAGA movement less than a week into his speakership.

Conservatives are calling Johnson out over his support for Israel and plans to deliver billions in aid to the country, with some arguing that hew newly-elected House speaker should be focusing on domestic policy instead.

“Politicians are incapable of putting America First!” Trump supporter Cynthia Holt posted about Johnson.

“MIKE JOHNSON PUTS ISRAEL 1ST KNOWING THERE ARE 4 MILLION ILLEGAL RIDING TRAIN CARAVANS THROUGH MEXICO,” Rumble personality Ryan Matta said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday.

Johnson, who was elected House speaker last Wednesday, has made Israel a top priority since taking the gavel. His first action as the leader of the House of Representatives was a resolution supporting Israel in its war with Hamas. Over the weekend, he took his first trip as speaker to Las Vegas to speak with the Republican Jewish Coalition and vowed to move forward with a $14.5 billion standalone aid package to Israel.

But his speakership is off to a tumultuous start now that conservatives, who had celebrated his speakership less than a week ago, are now criticizing his legislative priorities.

“I know it might be a stretch, but any chance you could stand with Americans?” one self-described patriot wrote to Johnson.

“If your [sic.] America first you sure could have fooled me,” another person said. “Since speaker it seems you have talked more publicly about helping Israel than you have about helping the American people.”

“Meet the new boss, same as the old boss,” a third person wrote on X. “‘No matter whom you vote for, you always wind up getting John McCain.’ – Thomas Woods.”

Newsweek reached out to Johnson’s office via email for comment.

Johnson, a little-known conservative, had initially been cheered by far-right Republicans when he won the gavel. Democrats used his victory to tout his ties to former President Donald Trump, the amicus brief he signed in December 2020 challenging the results of the presidential election and his January 2021 vote blocking Joe Biden‘s electoral college win.

Since becoming speaker, Johnson has focused much of his efforts on addressing the Israel-Hamas war that has been taking place over the three weeks that the House was without a leader.

In response to a tweet that the Louisiana Republican shared of himself reiterating his support for Israel, MAGA users flooded the responses to urge Johnson to take action on the U.S.-Mexico border or to release security footage of the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot instead.

“Many people in the USA wishing right about now ‘Politicians’ represented Americans as viciously as they do Israel. You have such a passion of Israel, why couldn’t you have the same passion for America?” one X user asked Johnson. “Release the J6 Footage and close the Border!”

“Our borders are open and the homeland is being and has been invaded for years by millions of illegal aliens and you put Israel First!” the Thomas Paine Band wrote on the social media platform. “The first thing you do is betray the majority of Republicans, the America First voters. You move at lightning speed for a foreign country while Fentanyl, gang members, murders, and terrorists are invading the USA! So predictable.”

This wouldn’t be the first time that the Israel-Hamas war has divided the MAGA movement. Conservatives have been divided over how the U.S. should respond to the conflict in the Middle East, with some urging support for the Israeli government, while others call for the nation to bow out of wars that don’t directly involve Americans.

On October 7, Hamas led the deadliest Palestinian militant attack on Israel in history. Israel subsequently launched its heaviest-ever airstrikes on Gaza. As of Monday, over 1,400 people had been killed in Israel, the Associated Press reported, citing the Israeli military. More than 8,000 people had been killed in Gaza, according to authorities there, the AP said.
