Videos Show Cleveland Battered by Storm after Tornado Warning Issued

Shocking videos show Cleveland being battered by a severe thunderstorm on Tuesday night.

High winds and rain swept through Greater Cleveland amid a tornado warning late Tuesday afternoon, leaving nearly 400,000 homes and businesses without power.

More than 327,000 customers were still without power as of Wednesday morning, according to Poweroutages.us.

The powerful storm was captured in video footage posted to X.

In one video, strong winds shook a 13-story apartment building, causing pictures hanging on the wall to become displaced.

In another video, a tree fell to the ground in high winds.

“Tornado warning was no joke!” the Cleveland resident posted on X. The post was accompanied by a picture of the fallen tree in the aftermath.

The National Weather Service has not confirmed a tornado in the area.

A tornado warning for southwestern Cuyahoga County and northeastern Lorain County expired at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, less than an hour after it was issued. During the warning, people were urged to seek shelter and take cover inside their basements in order to avoid being injured by flying debris.

A severe thunderstorm watch remained in place until 6 p.m. for 21 Northeast and North Central Ohio counties, including all of Greater Cleveland.

The storm, predicted with winds of up to 86 mph, downed trees and power lines, while Cleveland Hopkins International Airport experienced sporadic power outages over about a 90-minute period, according to an airport spokeswoman.

Meanwhile, Willoughby Hills firefighters said part of the roof of the fire department came off during high winds, Cleveland19 reported.

A Bruce in the USA concert was also canceled on Tuesday night, concert organizer Mentor Rocks said in a Facebook post.

The city of Cleveland said the Mayor’s Night Out Against Crime has been canceled due to weather.

Cleveland police are asking drivers to stay off the roads if possible.

“The traffic lights at the majority of the other intersections in the entire city are not working due to utility loss,” Parma police posted to Facebook.

The storm also brought more than 3 inches of rain to Ashtabula County, while 2.45 inches fell in Mentor and 2.53 inches just east of Perry.

Following the storm, the weather in Cleveland is predicted to be much calmer on Wednesday, with only a light breeze forecast.

Humidity will briefly climb on Thursday and Friday as the remnants of the tropical system head into central Pennsylvania. There is a small chance of showers late Thursday and early Friday.
