Toddler’s First Question After Mom Gives Birth: ‘Sibling Life Begins’

A toddler has stolen the show after her hilarious reaction to meeting her newborn sister for the first time went viral.

Posted by her dad Jay Wey on Instagram, the video is titled “special gift” as he and his wife Sharon prepare to welcome their second child.

The couple from the Bay Area in California, who share their Instagram account (@jayplussharon), begin by telling their 2-and-a-half-year-old that they were heading to the hospital. “The next time you see her, she’ll have a gift for you,” Wey tells his daughter.

Seemingly excited by this prospect, the little girl nods “OK.” Cut to the hospital where the Weys are enjoying some snacks and relaxing on their iPads while Sharon prepares for birth.

When their second daughter is born, Wey and his toddler walk hand-in-hand down the street and into the hospital to meet her new sibling for the first time.

While she’s in her mother’s arms, Wey’s toddler gives her new sister a little pat and in the following scene, peers over the crib and comes out with a hilarious first question: “Where’s my gift?”

Wey told Newsweek that his daughter’s misunderstanding was rooted in a comical mix-up. “My daughter video chats with her cousin and [she] always uses the cat filter, and my daughter thought that’s what she was going to look like in real life,” the dad of two said.

Wey’s video garnered over 1.5 million views, as well as thousands of comments from other social media users who were in stitches after watching.

“I wasn’t ready for that last part,” one commented, while another joked: “She’ll definitely ask if she can return it.”

Those who are the eldest siblings in their families related to the little girl’s question, as one user commented: “Damn, that was me when I saw my sis.”

Parents will often tell their first child that they will receive a gift when their new sibling is born to help make the transition smoother and ensure the older child feels special and not left out.

The arrival of a new baby can be a big change, and this gesture helps the first child associate the birth with something positive.

“And so sibling life begins,” another user commented.

When asked if the two siblings are bonding, Wey confirmed: “Yes, now they’re friends.”
