The Community Spotlight 2024.09.21

Welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host as we look back at the site-related news and best community creations from the previous week!

This week on Giant Bomb, Dan caused a bit of a stir with his lack of historical knowledge and Grubb flew a plane. Totally normal week.

When it comes to bugs and issues, there are still some users reporting issues when it comes to linking their premium subscription to the Giant Bomb store. If that’s the case, drop a comment in the thread that I linked but remember to ping @dtoast. You can also ping Dtoast in the “Site-Tech-Issues” board on the Giant Bomb Discord as well as send him an email to [email protected]. Either way, Dtoast seems to have developed a fairly quick protocol when it comes to resolving issues with this specific problem.

Likewise, the issues that I detailed about the Premium Podcast feeds should be mostly fixed. Shows have been resent and the feeds should be functional for most of you. If you are still having issues with Pocketcast specifically, go to this page https://www.giantbomb.com/feeds/ and click “RSS” to the right of “Giant Bombcast (Premium)” (in a desktop browser, sometimes mobile redirects it to an app). Look for the text in the first couple “paragraphs” of “Most of the usual crew was out this week, so guest host Tam brings in Shawn, Niki, and Mike” (you can just search with CTRL+F). If it’s there, the RSS feed is working properly for you and it’s a Pocket Casts thing (maybe re-submit it at https://pocketcasts.com/submit/).

Finally, don’t forget that while Bee Week is over, you can still buy a Bee Week 2024 t-shirt and/or sweatshirt on the Giant Bomb store.

The Dan Ryckert Cycle Of Despair (By: @ogto)

Dan is still Dan and seemingly has an endless supply of historical and scientific gaps in his knowledge. This week, he seemingly expressed shock about the size of the Roman Empire and didn’t know South Sudan existed. He may have even uttered “WHEN DID ENGLAND START??” during a Fandom meeting. Who can say?!

Grubb The Pilot (By: @theMaximumYeti)

So, Grubb flew an airplane and documented the experience! If you haven’t seen the video yet, you definitely should. In response, chucktowski/theMaximumYeti decided to have some fun with Photoshop to mark the occasion, but as you can see below, they were not the only person.

Grubb x Otto (By: @jearum)

I know I’m not the only person who felt like there was a serious the lack of Airplane references during Grubb’s airplane video. Luckily, jearum has me and everyone else covered with this work of Photoshoppery goodness.

Additionally, following the release of Astro Bot, bigsocrates to dust off the OG PSVR to play Astro Bot Rescue Mission. However, as they share on their latest blog, they got spooked in a not so great way that speaks to a shortcoming with VR.

The length of a game obviously doesn’t guarantee its quality. However, what are the longest games you have played, outside of MMOs, and still enjoyed? Have you ever fully committed to completing everything in a game for a solid year?

Also, don’t revisionists make you think otherwise. The Dreamcast controller was TERRIBLE!

Just say this to yourself: The Dreamcast is twenty-five. I vividly remember being in a classroom and lamenting the death of the console as I read about Sega pulling out of the console market in the weekly Scholastic News reader. Big props to those of you that know what I’m talking about; we got those article summaries done and our AR points together.

To those of you that missed out on the Dreamcast, give our wiki page of the console a read and see what made it so special to so many people, especially its incredible launch games.
