Matt Reeves Shares His Vision For The Batman’s Epic Crime Saga

This week, HBO and Max premiered The Penguin, the first spin-off series from The Batman. And while this show is a part of director Matt Reeves’ plans for what he calls The Batman Epic Crime Saga, The Penguin was never meant to be the only series to come out of the first film. But while separate shows about the Gotham City PD and Arkham Asylum fell by the wayside, Reeves now says that there will be more spin-offs if The Penguin is successful.

While speaking with EW, Reeves declined to say which spin-offs he has in mind beyond The Penguin. But he did indicate that the next show or shows will be built around some of the ideas that were in the previous GCPD and Arkham Asylum pitches.

“The things that we’re talking about [now] are evolved versions of those [spin-offs],” said Reeves. “It’s not like that just didn’t work. It was like, we need to evolve this. I would describe it less as something that didn’t work out and more as something that is still along a path toward arriving at its destination.”

Although Robert Pattinson’s Batman will not be appearing in The Penguin, Reeves admitted that he briefly considered including him. He also hinted that Pattinson’s Dark Knight could show up in another series.

“That’s not to say that there would never be an appearance by Batman or Bruce or something like that [on a future series],” said Reeves. “[The Penguin showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] and I did speak. ‘Do we want to find a way to get Rob to somehow be in this show?’ But that was an afterthought.”

For now, the big news from Reeves is that he’s finished the script for The Batman Part 2, and he’s planning to begin filming the sequel next year. He also added that, “There’s a period of time” that the sequel will leap ahead to after the events of The Penguin. “Oz does become one of the entry points into the movie. I can’t tell you where it goes from there, except to say that we’re super excited about it.”

The Batman Part 2 will hit theaters on October 2, 2026.
