Letitia James New Legal Move in Trump Case ‘Relevant’ to Election: Attorney

New York Attorney General Letitia James’ new legal move in former President Donald Trump‘s New York civil fraud case is “relevant” to November’s election, attorney Glenn Kirschner said Friday.

In February, New York Judge Arthur Engoron fined Trump, now the Republican presidential nominee, $464 million after finding him liable for business fraud. Trump maintains his innocence, claiming the case is politically motivated and his legal team appealed Engoron’s judgment.

On Wednesday, James’ office asked the New York Appellate Court to affirm Engoron’s judgment, writing in a filing that the judge’s ruling is “supported by overwhelming evidence that, in each Statement, defendants used a variety of deceptive strategies to vastly misrepresent the values of Mr. Trump’s assets.”

In a video posted to YouTube on Friday for his show Justice Matters, Kirschner, a former U.S. attorney and frequent Trump critic who has appeared on MSNBC as a legal analyst, spoke of James’ latest filing and said, “It’s pretty darn relevant to the presidential race. It bears directly on Donald Trump’s suitability to ever hold office again. We have to add this legal development together with all the other legal developments and circumstances Donald Trump is facing.”

Kirschner then went into Trump’s other legal troubles such as the 34 felonies he was handed down by a New York jury in late May involving a hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels and his pending federal election interference case in Washington, D.C., and state election interference case in Georgia. Trump has pleaded not guilty to the pending cases against him and maintains his innocence in the hush money case, which he is currently trying to overturn. He claims all the cases against him are politically motivated.

“Donald Trump is de facto disqualified from ever holding office again, never mind the highest office in the land, president of the United States,” Kirschner added.

Steven Cheung, Trump’s communications director, told Newsweek via email on Saturday morning, “Loser Glenn Kirschner is a dumba** and a notorious trafficker of wild conspiracy theories and dubious legal analysis, and has been shunned by the legal community at large.”

Newsweek has reached out to Kirschner via text message and James’ office via email for comment on Saturday morning.

The appellate court is set to hear the arguments relating to Trump’s appeal of his civil fraud case on September 26, which is about six weeks before Election Day. Some states would have started early voting by then. There could be a decision in the case before the end of the presidential race as the appellate court usually hands down its rulings about a month after arguments, according to NBC News.

In the civil fraud case against Trump, Engoron found the former president, his adult sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, and The Trump Organization, Trump’s real estate company, liable for a scheme in which the value of the former president’s net worth and assets were unlawfully inflated to obtain more favorable business deals.

Trump was ordered to pay nearly half a billion dollars and was banned from doing business in New York for three years. Donald Jr. and Eric were ordered to each pay more than $4 million and were banned from doing business in New York for two years.
