Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival To Premiere ‘American Coup: Wilmington 1898,’ Honor Director Steve James, Showcase James Carville, Adam Kinzinger, Luther Vandross Films

EXCLUSIVE: The Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival will host the world premiere of American Coup: Wilmington 1898, about a forgotten chapter in American history that saw a white supremacist mob terrorize Black residents of a North Carolina city, overthrowing an elected city government.

The film directed by Yoruba Richen and Brad Lichtenstein is among the highlights of the 33rd edition of HSDFF, the oldest all-documentary film festival in North America. Directors Richen and Lichtenstein and two of the film’s main participants are expected to attend the festival, which runs October 18-26 in the Arkansas resort town. [Scroll for the full lineup]

HSDFF, presented by Oaklawn, will kick off with Space Cowboy, directed by Marah Strauch and Bryce Leavitt, fresh from its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film tells the story of Joe Jennings, a man who has pulled off some of the most amazing skydiving stunts in cinema history, some that involve hurling cars out of airplanes. Dawn Porter’s Luther: Never Too Much, about the late singer Luther Vandross, will close the festival on Saturday, October 26.

Watch on Deadline

'Louder Than Guns'

The world premiere of Louder Than Guns, directed by Doug Pray, will serve as the festival Centerpiece selection, screening Tuesday, October 22. HSDFF notes, “The film follows Ketch Secor, founding member of the bluegrass band Old Crow Medicine Show, and radio journalist David Greene as they seek to bring people together to have an open conversation about gun violence in America following a 2023 mass school shooting in Secor’s home community of Nashville.”

Director Steve James

Steve James, one of America’s most acclaimed documentary filmmakers, will receive HSDFF’s Brent Renaud Career Achievement Award (an honor named for the late American journalist and filmmaker who was killed by Russian soldiers while covering the war in Ukraine in 2022). James’s work includes Hoop Dreams, Life Itself, The Interrupters, Oscar-nominated Abacus: Small Enough to Jail, and 2022’s A Compassionate Spy.

The HSDFF Impact Award will be presented to Maisie Crow and Abbie Perrault, directors of Zurawski v Texas, which just held its world premiere at Telluride. Their timely documentary, which “reveals the aftermath of Roe v. Wade’s reversal by presenting the stories of women who faced life-threatening crises due to Texas’ harsh abortion law,” will screen at HSDFF, with Amanda Zurawski, one of the film’s main participants, in attendance.

The festival will host an expanded edition of the HSDFF Filmmaker Forum from Oct. 20–22, building off last year’s successful launch. The Forum, sponsored by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, convenes “filmmakers and industry leaders from throughout the South and mid-South regions and from across the U.S.,” offering three days of “dynamic programming focused on the business, art, and craft of documentary storytelling with a focus on public media, and a wider lens on the nonfiction ecosystem as a whole.”

HSDFF Executive Director Ken Jacobson said in a statement, “In our 33rd year, we continue to celebrate the vibrant art of documentary, while also spotlighting the creative process itself by highlighting two exciting works in progress and the screening of new shorts from our Documentary Filmmaking Workshop. We are also honored, for the second year in in a row, to be the host of the Filmmaker Forum, a three-day filmmaker and industry conference focused on supporting filmmakers in the South and Mid-South region, generously supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, as well as Reel South and PBS.”

Jacobson continued, “In addition to our extraordinary Opening, Closing and Centerpiece films, all of which will have guests attending, we are also thrilled to honor one of the true documentary filmmaking stalwarts of our time, Steve James as our Career Achievement Award recipient. For this year’s Impact Award, we couldn’t be more pleased to honor two filmmakers, Maisie Crow and Abbie Perrault, whose new documentary Zurawski v Texas is strikingly urgent, dealing with one of the critical issues being discussed during this election season. Finally, we break new ground for a documentary-focused film festival by looking at the art of the mockumentary and docudrama, via an Arkansas classic, The Legend of Boggy Creek.”

'The Legend of Boggy Creek' poster

The latter film, released as a documentary in 1972, “was inspired by true events that happened in the small town of Fouke, Arkansas,” according to the film’s website, built around reported sightings of “an agressive sasqsuatch-like creature known as the ‘Fouke Monster,’” going back to the 1940s.

In a more serious vein, HSDFF will host a day devoted to Politics on Film, screening a quartet of films:

  • Petra Costa’s Apocalypse in the Tropics, which finds the filmmaker revisiting the volatile, complex terrain of Brazilian presidential politics following her 2019 Academy Award-nominated masterpiece The Edge of Democracy.
  • Matt Tyrnauer’s Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid! focuses on political consultant James Carville, long heralded as a strategic genius for masterminding Bill Clinton’s successful 1992 presidential campaign.
  • The Last Republican about Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who was a rising star in the Republican party, until his conscience got the better of him following the events of January 6th. Directed by Steve Pink, known for a decidedly not-documentary film, the comedy Hot Tub Time Machine.
  • The 1963 cinema verité classic Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment, directed by Robert Drew. The screening, presented with the Clinton Presidential Center, examines JFK’s response in 1963 to an attempt by Alabama’s then-Gov. George Wallace to prevent the integration of the University of Alabama.

In addition to American Coup: Wilmington 1898, HSDFF Special Presentations include a 10th Anniversary Retrospective Screening of Reel South Shorts; Sam Green In Process, “in which acclaimed documentary filmmaker Sam Green, known for his innovative ‘live’ documentaries, presents material from his latest project, Trees”; and a special 30 for 30 15th Anniversary Panel celebrating the 15th Anniversary of ESPN’s groundbreaking 30 for 30 documentary series.

'Bring Them Home'

Ivan MacDonald, Ivy MacDonald, and Daniel Glick’s Bring Them Home, another HSDFF Special Presentation, launches the festival’s new Native/Indigenous Film Section. Bring Them Home “follows the Blackfeet Nation’s preparations to reintroduce bison to their ancestral lands for the first time in a century.”
