Full Moon Pizzeria is located at the prime corner of Arthur Avenue’s enclave of Italian eateries, and its pizza slices and pies are famous in the neighborhood and beyond. A small sit-down area allows patrons to relax and enjoy their classic slice, Sicilian version or even one of the raved-about calzones, but the food from this bustling business is mostly taken to go. The pizza crusts are dusted with just enough cornmeal to add that extra flavor and crunch.

NYC summer staple Nathan’s serves the quintessential Coney Island hot dog, plus fresh crinkle-cut french fries, a short walk from the Coney Island boardwalk and beach. Founded by Polish immigrant Nathan Handwerker in 1916, the iconic restaurant is a testament to the opportunities the City holds for people all around the globe. Of course, it’s also the site of the world’s best-known eating competition—the International Hot Dog Eating Contest— where every July 4, hungry participants have 10 minutes to scarf down as many franks as possible.

Forest Hills’ old-school ice cream parlor first opened its doors in 1925 and has been in operation as Eddie’s Sweet Shop since 1967. The family-owned restaurant purposely evokes the past, with expertly maintained pressed tin ceilings, antique cash registers, polished marble counters and cast-iron swivel stools to sit on while you order up a dish of one of the shop’s nearly 20 homemade ice cream flavors.

A hip update on the traditional beach concession stand, Rippers—created by the culinary minds behind New Brooklyn stalwarts Roberta’s and the Meat Hook—serves up classic summer fare like burgers, hot dogs and fries with beer, sangria and a selection of fresh juices to wash them down. The spot also hosts live music and entertainment in the evenings, to cap off a long day in the sun.
F&F Pizzeria

F&F Pizzeria is more than just a slice joint. Frank Falcinelli and Frank Castronovo (Frankie’s Spuntino, Franks Wine Bar) got help perfecting blistered crusts from the experts: famed pizzaiolo Chris Bianco, a James Beard award winner for Phoenix’s Pizzeria Bianco, and Chad Robertson, the co-founder of San Francisco’s revered Tartine. The garage-like space is bare bones rock ‘n’ roll, the decor mostly consisting of stacked pizza boxes and cans of organic Bianco DiNapoli tomatoes. It’s open from noon-ish until 9pm (or until the dough runs out). Get whatever they have and devour it at a standing table or in their back patio.

A thin, crispy slice is the signature of this beloved Staten Island pizza institution, which is also famed for its vodka pie. In addition to standard pizzas, Joe & Pat’s offers creative seasonal pizza toppings, like shrimp, as well as more upscale traditional Italian restaurant fare, like fettuccine, minestrone and arugula salad.

Given all the excellent pizzerias in the City, is it really necessary to hit Paulie Gee’s Slice Shop in Greenpoint—the slice-friendly offshoot of his original pies-only spot? Yes, without question. Go by yourself, or with friends or family, and whenever you have any excuse. The crisp-bottomed pies are fired up in a gas oven by a crackerjack team. The shop offers classic toppings (pepperoni, sausage), along with vegan and vegetarian options.
The mid-century modern space is pure nostalgia, with wood-paneled walls, an antique TV and napkin dispensers on tables. The back room features a compact bar with several beers on tap.
Peter Pan Donut & Pastry Shop
