Courteney Cox Says ‘I’m Not Officially Signed on’ for ‘Scream 7’ Yet and Hopes Dewey Can Appear: ‘They Have to Figure It Out’

Dewey, David Arquette’s beloved “Scream” character, may have been killed off in the fifth installment of the franchise, but Courteney Cox is hoping he can somehow appear in “Scream 7.”

“I understand the reasons they did it, but whoa! Talk about a missed character,” Cox told me at the Rock4EB charity event Saturday. “Dewey is so loved by ‘Scream’ fans. They have to figure it out.”

Turns out, Cox has yet to sign on for “Scream 7.” As I first reported in March, Cox began talks to reprise Gale Weathers in the seventh installment of the franchise following the announcement that Neve Campbell would return after skipping “Scream 6” due to a salary dispute.

“I’m not officially signed on,” Cox said. “I’m not, but there will be a ‘Scream 7.’”

Not that Cox doesn’t want to do it. She said she’s “excited” that the film will mark Kevin Williamson’s first time directing a “Scream” movie. Williamson wrote the script for the first “Scream” in 1996. He came on board as director for the latest installment after Christopher Landon exited the project in late December.

“You can’t get better than that choice,” Cox said of Williamson. “It’s going to be fun.”

Cox said she has no timeline in mind for making a final decision: “They’re rewriting all the time. It’s not like I don’t know what’s going on.”

Campbell previously told IndieWire that filming is set to begin in December in Atlanta after being postponed a few months due to her and Williamson’s schedules.

There have been no casting announcements for “Scream 7” since Campbell said she was coming back in March. Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, who starred in the first two movies of the “Scream” reboot, are not returning for the seventh movie. Barrera was fired from “Scream 7” last year over social media posts about Israel. Shortly after, news broke that Ortega was no longer available due to her shooting schedule for Netflix’s “Wednesday.”
