Pierre-Emmanuel Lyet’s “Shadow Story”

Pierre-Emmanuel Lyet’s “Shadow Story”

The artist attempts to preserve the most perfect time of year.

A child walks toward an adult who is seated on a bench in a park.

With the tang of fall in the air comes some of the best weather of the year. For the cover of the September 30, 2024, issue, his first for the magazine, Pierre-Emmanuel Lyet captures that fleeting feeling—and the longing for it to last. “This is about a suspended slice of time,” Lyet said. “There are two characters, but they could also be the same person—perhaps the woman on the bench sees herself as the child playing in the park, turning the moment into a timeless one.”

A child dances and plays while their parent watches.
