Alabama Mass Shooting Leaves Four Dead and Multiple Injured

Four people have reportedly been killed and scores of others injured in a mass shooting in Alabama.

The incident happened in the Five Points South neighborhood of Birmingham at around 11 p.m. on Saturday night. According to a report by CNN, two men and a woman were found unresponsive at the scene with gunshot wounds—all three were later pronounced dead. A fourth victim died in hospital.

It is believed multiple shooters may have been involved. The University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital is treating 11 of the victims, a hospital spokesperson told CNN.

“Officers are on the scene of multiple people shot with possibly multiple casualties,” the Birmingham Police Department wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

What We Know

The shooting took place in the Five Points South area of the city, home to the University of Alabama and a popular area at weekends.

At the time of writing, it was unclear whether the shooters, who have not yet been apprehended, used a vehicle or walked to the scene. A motive for the attack has not yet been established.

“There is no greater resource than the public,” Birmingham police officer Truman Fitzgerald said. “We will do everything we possibly can to make sure we uncover, identify and hunt down whoever is responsible for preying on our people this morning.”

Posting on X, public radio station WBHM reporter Drew Hawkins said: “Automatic rifle fire just broke out right in front of us in the Five Points South area of Birmingham. I counted at least 5 possible deceased and multiple wounded.”

He said there was “chaos and pandemonium in the immediate aftermath.”

Images from the scene show people lying on the floor and several law enforcement vehicles in the area.

Newsweek has contacted the Birmingham Police Department via email outside of standard working hours.
