“Wordle” #1,118 Clues, Hints and Answer for Thursday, July 11 Game

No matter how long you’ve been playing Wordle, you are bound to need help at some point or other.

This is where Newsweek comes in, as we have put together a few hints to help you out with the daily brainteaser.

Welsh-born engineer Josh Wardle invented the game for his girlfriend during a COVID-19 lockdown but eventually decided to release it to the public. The game exploded from 90 users on November 1, 2021 to 300,000 on January 2, 2022, according to figures by Statista. The New York Times bought the game in January 2022 and, since then, it has become its most-popular online game.

To solve the daily puzzle, players need to work out a mystery five-letter word in six guesses or fewer. They are guided by a color-coded tile system to let them know if they are on the right track.

A green tile means the letter is correct, while yellow tells you the letter appears in the word but is in the wrong spot. Finally, a gray tile shows that the letter does not appear in the word at all.

Wordle aficionados aim to guess the day’s word in as few tries as possible, and play every day to continue their winning streak.

In an interview with Newsweek, Erhan Aslan, an expert in applied linguistics who teaches at the University of Reading in the U.K., said playing tactically is the best way to solve the daily puzzle.

“One thing that I think is important in this game is the starting letter chosen. Starting off with letters that include commonly used vowels, for example, e and a, consonants such as r and t, and sound sequences might be helpful,” Aslan said.

“Choosing a word that starts with q, z, j, or x, for instance, may not be the best choice. As you get more feedback after a few guesses, users need to draw on some knowledge of phonics to narrow or eliminate some words that they might be thinking.

“For example, if the second letter of the target word is l (indicated by green) and the player feels that the word starts with a consonant, they will need to know that there are only a few consonant cluster possibilities—such as bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl,” Aslan added.
