21C Museum Hotel in Bentonville Opens Eyes in the Ozarks

• Bookmarks: 43

First up is a tour of 21c’s Fragile Figures: Beings and Time, a revealing look at intersections between vulnerability and power in portraiture. It’s an exhibition that examines the “complexity of class, identity, and politics in history and more specifically, art history. The works in Fragile Figures: Beings and Time are comprised of a vast array of mediums including video, photography, and installations.

Entry to all 21c museums is free to the public. Visitors are greeted by 4ft high penguin stewards. But what about those penguins?

Each 21c location was assigned a specific color penguin that embodies the identity of their city. Green was chosen to embody the spirit of Bentonville and the city’s dedication to preserving its natural lush green environment. The sculptures, made from recycled plastic, were created by artist collective Cracking Art and are on permanent exhibition at each 21c. Although permanent, by no means are they stationary. It’s not out of the ordinary to find yourself face to face with one of these playful sentinels while opening the door of your hotel room or existing an elevator. They are also frequently invited to the head of the table in the hotel’s restaurant as honored dinner guests. The penguins serve as a reminder of the importance of sustainability and environmental conservation. The mission of Cracking Art is to raise awareness of environmental issues and the use and misuse of natural resources by creating artworks with materials derived from petroleum products.

We are excited at the prospect of more cultural hubs developing throughout the Bible Belt. Los Angeles and New York, eat your hearts out.

Stay tuned for our recap on Crystal Bridges.
