  • The House GOP has only two working days to determine the next step for the privileged resolution.

Members of the House of Representatives could take a vote to expel GOP Rep. George Santos from Congress this week after Democratic Rep. Robert Garcia introduced a privileged resolution on the floor to oust the New Yorker.

“George Santos is a fraud and a liar, and he needs to be expelled by the House,” Garcia wrote in a statement.

The resolution is privileged, meaning that House Republican leadership has just two legislative working days to schedule a vote on the matter, table it, or refer it to a committee, among other options.

If the resolution is brought to a vote, two-thirds of the House will need to vote to expel him for it to pass.

According to Axios, Garcia had House Democratic leadership’s blessing to introduce the resolution, which Garcia’s office said has close to 50 Democratic co-sponsors.

Earlier in May, federal prosecutors unsealed an indictment against Santos, charging him with 13 counts, including charges of theft of public funds, wire fraud, and money laundering.

Since the indictment, members of his own party have begun turning on the embattled congressman, calling him “a complete embarrassment.”

“I think he needs to go right away, and I hope that he resigns,” said Rep. Nick LaLota, a fellow New York Republican.

After pleading “not guilty” to the 13 counts, Santos recently told reporters he planned to fight the charges and refused to resign from Congress.
